How to Make a Magic Circle

The magic circle is an essential crochet technique that helps eliminate holes in projects worked in the round. If you’re not familiar with it yet, I have a full blog post and a step-by-step video tutorial to guide you through the process.

Invisible Join

1. Cut the working end of your yarn and pull it up and through the last stitch that was worked.

2. Thread the tail of yarn through a tapestry needle.

3. Skip the first stitch, insert your tapestry needle into the second stitch from front to back through both loops of the stitch, pull yarn through.

4. Insert your tapestry needle from front to back into the back loop only of the stitch the yarn is originating from, pull yarn through.

5. Securely weave in your ends.

I have full video tutorial and blog post on how to create an invisible join.

Puff Stitch (ps)

1. Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).

2. Yo, insert hook into same st, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).

Notes

  • The market bag is constructed from individual hexagon motifs, which are seamed together after all motifs are completed.

  • The right side of each motif is the side that faces you while you are working it.

  • A chain 3 at the beginning of a round or row counts as one double crochet.

Fasten off using an invisible join. Weave in ends.

Seaming

Arrange the hexagons following the layout shown in the image below.

With 6 motifs arranged in a flower shape (one “petal” space left open), place all motifs wrong sides facing up.

Using a tapestry needle, whip stitch through the back loops only of both motifs to join. Seam 5 outer motifs to the center motif, working along one side at a time.

Each side consists of 11 stitches total: 9 double crochet stitches and 2 treble crochet stitches (one from each corner).

Once all 5 motifs have been seamed to the center motif, turn work so the right side is facing up.

Place the final motif on top of the center motif with wrong sides facing up.

Fold each of the 5 outer motifs inward so their edges align with the corresponding sides of the center motif.

Seam each outer motif to the center motif along the side that touches it, using a whip stitch worked through the back loops only.

Seam between each of the outer motifs using a whip stitch worked in the back loops only.

For each seam, begin and end in the treble crochet stitches at the corners that were previously joined to the center motif (these stitches do not belong to the side being seamed). This helps eliminate gaps at the junction where the seams meet.

Strap

Using a 5 mm crochet hook, join yarn for the strap at the top left corner of the bag.

Locate the 2 treble crochet stitches that form the corner. From the treble crochet farthest to the right, count down 5 stitches along the edge. Join yarn in this stitch.

Row 1 ch 1, sc in same st yarn was joined in, sc in next 11 sts, ch 1, turn {12 sts}

Row 2 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {12 sts}

Row 3 sc2tog, sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog, ch 1, turn {10 sts}

Row 4 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {10 sts}

Row 5 sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, ch 1, turn {8 sts}

Row 6 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {8 sts}

Row 7 sc2tog, sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog, ch 1, turn {6 sts}

Row 8 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {6 sts}

Row 9 sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, ch 1, turn {4 sts}

Rows 10 - 80 (or desired length) sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {4 sts}

Row 81 sc 2 times in first st, sc in next 2 sts, sc 2 times in last st, ch 1, turn {6 sts}

Row 82 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {6 sts}

Row 83 sc 2 times in first st, sc in next 4 sts, sc 2 times in last st, ch 1, turn {8 sts}

Row 84 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {8 sts}

Row 85 sc 2 times in first st, sc in next 6 sts, sc 2 times in last st, ch 1, turn {10 sts}

Row 86 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {10 sts}

Row 87 sc 2 times in first st, sc in next 8 sts, sc 2 times in last st, ch 1, turn {12 sts}

Row 88 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn {12 sts}

Row 89 sc in each st across, fasten off leaving a tail for seaming {12 sts}

Using a tapestry needle and the tail end of yarn just fastened off, begin in the 5th stitch down from the center 2 treble crochets that form the corner of the bag.

Whip stitch the strap to the opening of the bag, working through all 12 stitches to secure it in place.

Finishing Edges

Using a 5 mm crochet hook, join yarn in any stitch along the edge of the bag.

Work single crochet evenly around the opening of the bag, working one single crochet in each stitch along the opening of the bag and one single crochet into the side of each row along the strap edge.

When you have worked all the way around, fasten off using an invisible join.

Repeat the same process on the opposite side of the strap.
