Difficulty

This is an Easy level pattern. A simple stitch pattern and simple shaping is used.

Finished Measurements

The hat is designed with a snug fit (about 2–3 cm of negative ease). Choose the size closest to your head measurement.

Centimeters given as: Baby (Toddler) Child (Teen) Adult Small (Adult Medium) Adult Large

Finished Hat Circumference: 38 (42) 46 (50) 54 (58) 63

Hat Diameter with brim: 22 (26) 27 (30) 32 (38) 40

Hat Height: 27.5 (32.5) 35.8 (39.2) 42.5 (45.8) 49.2

Inches given as: Baby (Toddler) Child (Teen) Adult Small (Adult Medium) Adult Large

Finished Hat Circumference: 15 (16.5) 18 (19.5) 21 (23) 25

Hat Diameter with brim: 9 (10) 10.5 (12) 12.5 (15) 15.5

Hat Height: 10.5 (13) 14 (15.5) 16.5 (18) 19.5

Yarn

You will need the following amounts of a chunky weight (5) yarn given as: Baby (Toddler) Child (Adult Small) Adult Medium (Adult Large

Meters: 120 (140) 150 (165) 180 (200) 210

Yards: 130 (150) 165 (180) 195 (210) 225

Sample was made using Juicy Couture Luxe Velour Sparkle in the color “coral haze.” Luxe Velour Sparkle is a 98% polyester, 2% metallic, chunky weight (5) yarn that contains 98 meters (107 yards) per 100 grams (3.5 oz).

If you’ve been hunting down Juicy Couture Luxe Velour, you probably know it was a JOANN-exclusive yarn. I loved it for its plush velvet texture and that magical little sparkle woven through, it was perfect for whimsical projects like this Velvet Witch Hat.

Unfortunately, with JOANN now closing all its stores after bankruptcy, Luxe Velour is no longer widely available (although, at the time of this blog post, it can still be found on Etsy). Michaels has picked up some of JOANN’s brands and product lines, but so far there’s no word yet on whether Luxe Velour will make a comeback under their name. I’ll definitely keep an eye out and update you if it does!

In the meantime, here are some great alternatives that give a similar look and feel:

1. Hobbii Honey Bunny Shine

  • Super soft velvet chenille yarn with a metallic sparkle thread (probably the closest to Luxe Velour)

  • Price: $6–$7 per skein

2. Bernat Velvet Yarn

  • A spin on the classic Bernat Blanket yarn with a subtle shimmer

  • Price: $10–$12 per jumbo skein

3. King Cole Yummy

  • A super soft chenille yarn, comes in lovely pastel shades and bold colors

  • Price: about $8–$9 per skein

Special Stitches & Techniques

Invisible Join

1. Cut the working end of your yarn and pull it up and through the last stitch that was worked.

2. Thread the tail of yarn through a tapestry needle.

3. Skip the first stitch, insert your tapestry needle into the second stitch from front to back through both loops of the stitch, pull yarn through.

4. Insert your tapestry needle from front to back into the back loop only of the stitch the yarn is originating from, pull yarn through.

5. Securely weave in your ends.

I have full video tutorial and blog post on how to create an invisible join.

How to Make a Magic Circle

The magic circle is an essential crochet technique that helps eliminate holes in projects worked in the round. If you’re not familiar with it yet, I have a full blog post and a step-by-step video tutorial to guide you through the process.

How to Crochet Even Circles

For simplicity, this pattern uses stacked increases in the round. When increases are stacked directly on top of each other, the hat may develop slight points at the crown. To avoid this, vary the number of starting stitches in each round before the first increase.

I have a full blog post and video tutorial to guide you through the process.
