You will need the following amounts of a RED worsted (4) weight yarn: given as baby (toddler) child (adult) adult large

meters: 60 (70) 100 (115) 120

yards: 65 (75) 110 (120) 130

Sample was made using Lion Brand Heartland yarn in the color “redwood”. Heartland is a 100% acrylic, worsted weight (4) yarn that contains 230 meters (251 yards) per 142 grams (5 ounces).

You will also need the following amounts of a WHITE worsted (4) weight yarn: given as baby (toddler) child (adult) adult large

meters: 45 (50) 70 (85) 90

yards: 50 (55) 80 (95) 100

Sample was made using Lion Brand Skein Tones in the color “ivory”. Skein Tones is a 100% acrylic, worsted weight (4) yarn that contains 170 meters (185 yards) per 100 grams (3.5 ounces).

Hook Size and Notions

  • 4 mm crochet hook

Gauge

The beanie band should measure approximately 3.5 (3.5) 4 (5.5) 5.5 cm in width and have 18 rows in 10 cm (4") using a 4 mm crochet hook.

Work several rows of the beanie band then measure to check gauge.

Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog)

1. Yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).

2. Yo, pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook).

3. Yo, insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).

4. Yo, pull through first 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook).

5. Yo, pull through all loops on hook.

Granny Spike Stitch

1. Dc in next ch 1 sp.

2. Dc in center st of the dc cluster from two rounds prior.

3. When working the double crochet spike stitch (step 2) pull the loop up high enough to meet the height of the previous double crochet made (from step 1).

4. Dc in same ch 1 sp.

How to make a granny spike stitch crochet

Notes

  • This is an Easy level pattern. A basic stitch pattern and simple shaping is used to make this beanie.

  • The beanie is worked from the bottom up. Crochet ribbing is worked first in rows to form the hat band, then the beanie portion is worked in joined rounds on top of the ribbing.

  • A chain 3 at the beginning of a round counts as a double crochet stitch.

  • Stitch counts are given at the end of each row as follows: {baby, toddler, child, adult, adult large}

Pattern

Hat Band

Using a 4 mm crochet hook and red yarn, ch 6 (6) 8 (10) 10

Row 1 sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, ch 1, turn {5, 5, 7, 9, 9}

Row 2 sc in first st, BLO sc to last st, sc in last st, ch 1, turn {5, 5, 7, 9, 9}

Rows 3 – 60 (68) 76 (84) 88 rep row 2, do not “ch 1, turn” on final row

Fasten off leaving approximately a 20 cm (8”) tail. Fold the band in half and whip stitch the open edges together.

Weave in ends.

Hat

Using a 5 mm crochet hook, join the color red on the outside of the hat band in the side of any row.

Rnd 1 ch 1, single crochet in the side of each row around, sl st to first st {60, 68, 76, 84, 88 sts}

Switch to white
